What is the course about?

This one day, expert-led, online course aims to equip paediatricians for an up-to-date approach to the management of perplexing presentations and fabricated and induced illness (FII). This is in line with the RCPCH guidance, updated in March 2021.

This course supports delegates to meet their Level 3 safeguarding competencies.

 

 

Target Audience

  • Paediatricians (at all levels)
  • Named and Designated Nurses for Safeguarding Children and other members of Nursing Staff working in Specialist Safeguarding Children teams.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand what FII is.
  • Outline the principles underpinning the updated perplexing presentations and FII in children guidance.
  • Establish an appropriate pathway in managing cases of perplexing presentations and FII, avoiding common pitfalls during diagnosis and when complications tend to arise.
  • Describe the requirements of record keeping needed to be able to build a chronology of events that supports good clinical decision making.
  • Recognise the importance of managing and maintaining relationships with families and other professionals to ensure the best outcome for the child.

Dr Alison Steele

Dr Steele is RCPCH Officer for child protection and safeguarding, consultant paediatrician at Tavistock and Portman

Dr Danya Glaser

Dr Glaser, initially a developmental paediatrician, is now a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She has practised, taught, researched and written widely on various aspects of child maltreatment including sexual and emotional abuse, neglect, and fabricated or induced illness (FII); child maltreatment and the Law with extensive expert witness work; the effects of child maltreatment on the developing brain; and Attachment. She is Visiting Professor at UCL. Dr Glaser is a past president of ISPCAN.
