How to Manage: Recognising Neuromuscular Disorders
This course focuses on the early recognition of neuromuscular conditions, bringing together a multi-professional team to deliver a case-based programme for health visitors, nurses, physiotherapists, general practitioners & allied healthcare professionals.
Muscle wasting conditions affect around 1 in every 1000 person in the UK. This one-day course will teach you a clear approach to effectively recognise a wide range of neuromuscular conditions such as Duchenne’s MD and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and carry out assessments for 0-5 year olds.
Using a mix of workshops, case studies and interactive tools to highlight which red flags you need to look out for, and how to correctly assess and recognise floppy babies, abnormal gait and muscular weakness.
This study day will help you develop an approach for early recognition of a wide-range of neuromuscular disorders.

Dr Henriette van Ruiten is a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist in Newcastle who specialises in neuromuscular disorders. Dr van Ruiten is passionate about speeding up the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders, as an early diagnosis allows early access to care standards and new treatments, which greatly improves outcome. She has developed a new RCPCH eLearning module (and accompanying free workshops) to help front line professionals spot abnormal motor development in babies and children, often a first sign of a neuromuscular disorders.
